Terrific Tuesdays: Personalized Cork Coaster
Earlier this year at Design*Sponge, a DIY post about cork coasters got me thinking. I always save my wine corks, so I saved up to make the coasters….but, I wanted to put my own personal spin on it…So that leads me to today’s Terrific Tuesdays posts…A cork coaster for you wine bottle.
First gather what you will need for the project:
- Sharp knife
- 6-10 corks (depending on the thickness of your coaster and the size of your coaster)
- Heavy duty thread in the color of your choice (I used upholstery thread)
- rub on letters
Cut your corks in even thicknesses (I cut mine about 1/4″ thick).
Arrange them in a design you like. I created a 3-4-3-4 design.
Now, start sewing them together. Make sure every cork is connected to the ones around it. It is a bit hard to get started, but once you do, the sewing goes a bit faster. You can use a thread that contrasts against the cork or use a thread that blends more with the cork color.
I am not a sewer, so I used a simple stitch just to connect them. All you experienced sewers may get a bit fancier with your stitching. Either way though, even the worst sewer can make this coaster.
I actually sewed a second stitch on all of my cork connections for more stability.
After you have your coaster put together, decide what you want to put on your coaster and start using your rub on letters according to their directions.
You could put your single initial on the coaster…
A triple initial…
Or a cool saying…
I am trying to feel a bit more carefree, so I took a note from Jerry Garcia (thanks Purple Lemon Hubby for the suggestion!) who had the phrase “Sans Souci” above the gate to his house. It means carefree or no problem.
Cool huh?
Hope you like this week’s project! Let me know what you decide to put on your coaster if you make it.
Toodles!

CUTE and such a great gift idea, I love it! The Jerry Garcia phrase is really fun too-I learned something! I’ll be linking.
Great idea. I have loads of corks from all the…juice bottles….ahem. I am gonna give this a try see what is going to look like. Thanks for sharing.
O
This is tooo cute! Especially for a coaster nazi like me ;) Hmm I just may have to try this out, lord knows we have enough wine corks!
