With the New Year coming up, I always start about my grandmother. Bless her heart, she was the most superstitious woman God has let walk on His green earth. I can’t tell you how many times I had to hold a button when I saw an ambulance, got warned about walking under a ladder, or turn around and walk the other way when a black cat moseyed in front of me.

She even tells the story (I really think she felt guilty about this to her dying day) of when my cousin Lindsey was born. She said my aunt and uncle had called to let her know that she was in labor. She jumped in her car and started down the road. Low and behold, what walks out in front of her, but a black cat! She said that she just kept on driving though. I really think she suspected that she was going to met with some mysterious force of bad luck because of that act.

Anyway, I tell you all of that to lead into what my family did to welcome in the New Year’s. My granny made sure we all had turnip greens, black eyed peas, and hog jowl for luck in the new year every January 1st. She would literally come unglued if we didn’t have some. I am a little antagonistic in nature, so one year I told her I wasn’t going to eat them. By the end of the day though, I had gotten such a guilt trip that I finally had to relent. I thought she actually might have a heart attack.

Now that my grandmother is gone, I usually still at least have a little black eyed peas and turnip greens just for old times sake…(You won’t ever see me eating hog jowl though).

So, what new year’s traditions do you practice? Do you have a superstitious streak too?

  • Let me guess…Kean brought it up. PL Brother was just an innocent hat handler! He is his mother’s son. LOL!
