I used to have a bunch of melamine and I loved it for eating outdoor but it did stain and scratch easily. We're kind of hard on dishes though.

I was reading about melamine yesterday (in wedding planning books) and it appears to be totally safe, but I would not recommend getting rid of it after a season. At least no via the trash, LOL. The downside seems to be that they can get stained by foods easier than other dishes.
