Kelly: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started painting (especially shoes as a medium)?

Rachel: I always like to describe myself as an art school drop-out with unquenched painting desires. I love all aspects and forms of art, but never found what I loved in college. The desire to create new things, however, never left me. Without me even noticing, I was doodling over the covers of my notepads and on scratch paper. I loved the way it looked. The doodles eventually spread down the legs of my favorite jeans, across our coffee table, and eventually down to my shoes. It all took off after that.

Kelly: What are your favorite things about creating your pieces?

Rachel: I’ve always been a bit of a shoe addict, and ANY job that lets me be as creative as I want AND involves shoes, cannot be all that bad. I adore everything about painting my shoes. What I love most is that I can be as quirky as I like. My designs are painted 100% freehand, so the designs some straight out of my paintbrush and onto the shoes. I do not sketch anything first. I love that level of perfect imperfection.

Kelly: What made you want to turn your art into a business?
Rachel
: Every time I wore my first pair of painted boots, I got a huge positive response. Several of my friends wanted me to paint shoes for them as well, and as I did, we gathered more and more attention. It started to spread by word of mouth, and before I knew it, I was in business!
