Kelly: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started making your beautiful pottery?

Shawna: …I am a full time potter and part time educator. I taught art in an elementary school for 5 years before making pottery my full time focus. I started making pottery in high school. I took a Saturday class at Tyler University outside of Philly and learned to thrown on the wheel and fire a raku kiln. When I went to school at the Maryland Institute College of Art I thought I was going to be a photographer but took the intro to ceramics class my freshman year and was officially hooked. After that I just knew that being a potter was my dream job and I wanted to make pots for the rest of my life.

Kelly: What are your favorite things about creating your pieces?

Shawna: I have so many different stages to my work and there are things I really like about each step of the process. I love making the pots, the wet clay and how it smells. The way it responds to the process of throwing out a big slab or letting it slide between my fingers as it spins on the wheel. I love the decoration and laying out all of my supplies, choosing how each pot will tell it’s story in the end. I love applying the stain and glaze after the work is fired, watching the stain seep into the clay and highlight all the textures of making only to be covered up with the thick icing of glaze just before heading into the final firing. Most of all I love opening the kiln at the end of the process and finding out what each pot really looks like because you never really know until it’s all done! Opening that kiln is like opening a present every week.

Kelly: What made you want to turn your art into a business?

Shawna: I went to school to be an artist so turning it into a business was about the only way I was going to be able to create full time. I truly believe that you can do anything if you just put your mind to it and being an artist is what I want to do. Plus, pottery is one of the oldest businesses around so it wasn’t that unusual.
