What I am Going Through (psst – another giveaway too!)

Hi lovely lemonheads. Thanks so much for joining me here today. I have a question for all you creatives…How do you get through what I like to call “artist’s funk?” I akin it to what writers face during stages of writer’s block. It is when I absolutely feel not one drop of creative juice flowing through my body.

Burned out - This is how I am feeling | by kianee on stock.xchang

I don’t know if it is the January let down after the holidays, the cold weather, the exhaustion of going “ninety to nothing” over the last 4 or so months, or just a combination of them all. I think I have officially burned out. Nothing left. Just a shell of Kelly is all that is remaining.

So how do you do it? How do you get your creative juices flowing again? I really need to know because I feel my work and my blog are both suffering right now. I need a kick start in the creative booty!

Purple Lemon Stationery

This is my shop's stationery

Leave me some tips in the comments section below. Each tip you leave will enter you into a drawing for a set of your own printable stationery for your shop or business. It includes files for folded note cards, flat note cards, business cards and note paper all created with your logo and or shop name. I use mine for writing thank you notes to my customers and clients when I package their items for shipping.

This giveaway is now closed.

This giveaway will close next Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at 5pm CST.

I am hoping this will jump start me into a creative renaissance…I am looking forward to all of your ideas.

Thanks lemonheads!

  • You have to feed your creativity to keep it alive. Like your inner child it needs to be nourished so that it can grow.
I know this because I have been terribly guilty of starving my creativity and expecting it to flourish. It just won’t work that way.
Do something entirely selfish. Something you will enjoy immensely. Don’t allow guilt to interfere. You are entitled to it. You need it. Everyone needs it. You don’t need to explain to anyone or expect them to understand.
Relax and relish it. Let the pleasure wash over you and refresh you. Allow your creativity some R&R time and it will start to flower again!

  • That is absolutely FABULOUS advice. Thank you for sharing Joanna!

  • Hope you can bounce back and bounce higher! I’ve been there so many times and must remind myself how important it is to feed my creativity to keep going!

  • I know I can! This too shall pass…

  • Be out in the outdoors, plan what you want to do in your flowerbeds in the spring, just let nature and the hope of spring get you going. Think of the beauty that is to come and imagine how gorgeous the redbuds, dogwoods and tulips are going to be.

  • Thanks MommaLemon….You always know best!

  • As simple as it sounds I surf the internet. you see something that sounds interesting do a little research and you suddenly have a whole strain of subjects. This week: looked for a little soul searching on youtube, came across LeijaTurunen’s vlog, some soul searching alternative views, one post on raw veganism, mentions David wolfe, leads to another video on scavanging for wild food, came up with an idea to create a list of native garden species to supplement household consumption.

  • Thanks Anna…That sounds like a great idea!

  • I try to go on vacation… which sometimes is just camping in the backyard or sleeping in the guest room. A change of pace is usually what gives me new ideas :) good luck!

  • I love to take myself off to an art gallery or craft show to get inspiration or just feel the other people around me be so high all because of the arts around them. It is contagious and I soon want to get home and let the creative juices flow.

  • I take a loooong hot bubble bath in the evening, drink a cup of hot milk with honey, and go to sleep early. In the morning I wake up refreshed with a whole bunch of new ideas AND the energy to carry them out!

  • Oh–one more tip!! I’ve used this before to get my crative juices flowing! Buy yourself a pack of gourmet dark chocolate (or milk chocolate, white, hazelnut, whatever is your fav), then go to your favorite bookstore (Barnes and Nobles for me), and grab up a tall stack of magazines on your favorite topics–house decorating, fashion, gardening, cooking, etc. Then go home and plop down on the floor with scissors, glue, and a sketchpad. Start cutting out pictures of everything that catches your eye–no self-censorship allowed. Just go with your intuition. Paste everything into a sketchpad. This has gotten my creativity and imagination flowing when I thought all was lost! When I do this, I come up with new ideas for my home, myself, my hobbies, my projects, etc. Most importantly, I’m re-inspired! Best of luck!!
P.s. The chocolate helps raise my spirits too! :)

  • You guys are good! Thanks for all the tips. I am already feeling inspired!

  • I get away from everything and find a quiet spot with a beautiful view. Then I just relax and at some point, I start thinking very fast and boom! creativity comes to me. :) Of course, I live in the Andes Mountains so its easy to find these beautiful, quiet spots. But they truly inspire me.

Also, taking a short vacation is great! Even a 3 day vacation where you can just relax will get your creativity flowing again, I hope.

Btw, I listed this giveaway in my blog. Here’s the link:

    Good luck!!!!

  • When you are alone in your room listen to relaxing music..

  • 2nd tip: close your eyes and take 3 deep breaths, i do that everytime i want to clear my head so i could think something creative

  • 3rd tip: go to the beach and sit in the sand with your pen and paper and just write down any ideas that comes to your mind

  • I find inspiration comes in the middle of the night just as I am about to go to bed and I think, A HA! I also find when doing something completely different suddenly something just pops into my head so maybe so a spring (winter) clean out of a cupboard and something hidden in the depths might give you that light bulb moment!
Cleaning and getting organised can be quite therapeutic!

  • 4thn tip: go to art galleries, look at photography books in the library or even children’s books!

  • I know this post is a little old…oops. Anyway, have you ever seen the book The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron? I had to read it for a preaching class in seminary. It has lots of great activities to get your creativeness going. Also, I can’t think of any off the top of my head, but I’ve noticed a couple of “e-classes” online for creative types. I looked up one: http://www.creativethursday.com/teaching.htm I don’t know anything about it but it looks interesting. Also, a singer I really like is Christine Kane and she has a great blog and does a lot of consulting for creative types. Reading her blog might give you some ideas http://christinekane.com/blog/

  • Thanks for those tips Linds…I actually read the creative thursday blog. I will check them all out!
