Happy Thursday lovely lemonheads! Today I have a wonderful Etsy find for you. It is SimplyTempted, a bath and body shop run by the fabulous Karen. She makes the most wonderful smelling and beautiful soaps, lotions, scrubs and bath bombs you could imagine.

This Blackberry and Vanilla Bean Cream flavor is yummy!

I was frantically searching Etsy for a great Mother’s Day present for my mom and mother-in-law this year when I stumbled across SimplyTempted. I decided to give it a try! I ordered lots of luscious scrubs and lotions, and the two lovely ladies in my life adored them. Want to know the best part about it? I got to try some of the product myself because Karen includes lots of little samples for you to try.

So it is about that time of year when I get an itch {not that kind of itch, crazy!}. I get the itch to get my gardening tools out, and get wrist deep in some lovely loamy soil. Since Purple Lemon Hubby and I just moved into a new house, we are both super excited to “get our garden on” this year. I have been pouring over seed catalogs, and browsing around on the internet for lovely outdoor accessories. Over the last few weeks, I have noticed some very nice items popping up all over Etsy. So, today I thought I would show you some things on my gardening wish list, garden markers.

Purple Lemon hubby actually got me one for Valentine’s…It is from Harmonized Creations on Etsy. The finish is a lovely silver. Mine looks very similar to this one:

Kelly: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you started in art?

Stephanie: i am 35, married for almost 7 years and have a 4 year old little boy. i work from home as a freelance graphic designer and artist. i work on my commercial design accounts during the day and do my artwork in the evenings and on weekends for the most part. There is always some crossover.
i have a BA in Fine Arts and also in Biology. i always thought i’d be a doctor growing up. Art was a love of mine, but i don’t think i really ever considered it as a career because i was very bookish and hadn’t really found my creative voice. i graduated college and took a job at an advertising/design agency while taking lab classes at night & getting prepared for medical school. i always figured i’d be having fun at my creative job only until i finished school and became a doctor. BUT! Life had a different plan for me….here i am.

Now i am very happy to be doing something creative everyday, to be home with my son and to have a certain amount of daily freedom in my life. i definitely think it is harder to work for yourself, but the benefits are pretty great too. i also think it’s an amazing thing that my artwork will live on and that when all is said and done, i will have communicated with countless people through it.

Kelly: Can you describe your style and why you are drawn to it?

Stephanie: i never really know how to answer this question! My style is all over the place in some ways. i use pen and ink and a very whimsical illustrative style sometimes and i have a more organic, raw color & layers thing going other times. i love to combine intricate detail and riotous amounts of color and i love interjecting some earthy elements whenever possible. Working on wood planks has sort of become an obsession and most of my originals are on wood boards. My art style is exactly the same as my fashion sense and decorating style. It’s mixy-matchy, earthy and vibrant and filed with delicate detail. It makes me smile. {It makes me smile too, Stephanie!}

Kelly: What are your favorite things about creating your pieces?

Stephanie: i like the surprise. You have a vision in your head, but how it all turns out on the page is always a mystery until you find yourself staring at a finished piece. i like playing with color. i like the sparkly feeling of inspiration that continually pops into my head as i make decisions during the process. i feel calm creating artwork. In design, i’m always feeling a bit of a nagging in the back of mind…wondering if the client will like my choices, etc….but with my art, i’m fearless and i only have to please myself. That feels great.

Kelly: What made you want to turn your art into a business?

Stephanie: i don’t think i ever made a conscious decision to start selling my work. i’d get a request here or there. The requests became more frequent. i was caught up in it. It just happened. Now, the decision i’ve made in the past 6-7 months, to actually dedicate myself to growing my art business…that has some soul searching behind it. i think i was looking 10 years down the road and i realized i didn’t want to be doing just graphic design the rest of my life. i realized that i was trudging through my day in anticipation of the time i’d get to sit down with my art. i wanted to shift that balance. Why not spend MOST of my time doing what makes me genuinely happy and less trudging through? i decided to jump in with both feet and just launched my new website last friday. It’s exciting and exhausting, but i think that’s the way it’s supposed to be : )

Jen was nice enough to indulge me by agreeing to an interview…So, let’s check out some of her lovelies and her wonderful interview:

Kelly: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started creating cards and stationery?

Jen: My name is Jen Pilchak and I’m a paper craftin’ housewife after my husband and I relocated to a new city for his career. It’s been fun learning a new city and settling in our first house. I started scrapbooking way before it was a popular/trendy hobby but I stumbled upon card making in 2003 when my boss introduced to me a Stampin’ Up catalog. I immediately fell in love with the idea of making greeting cards. I was hooked! Actually, one of my favorite parts of our house is all the space I have for crafting. I giggle inside every time I think that all my supplies once fit into a small rubbermaid container.

Kelly: Can you tell us a your crafty/handmade style and why you are drawn to it?

Jen: Oh gosh, I’m not sure what you’d call my style.. I suppose cute, trendy, simple would be three words I’d use to describe my style. A lot of my designs have a simple look to them but I just launched a couture line that all the designs have a lot more detail.

Kelly: What are your favorite things about creating your pieces?

Jen: My favorite aspect to creating my cards is being creative. I love being able to express how I’m feeling or capture a moment and I especially love creating custom cards for customers.

Kelly: What made you want to turn your art into a business?

Jen: My favorite past time is paper crafting and it’s always been a dream of mine to sell my cards. I made all our wedding invitations, and to be honest- I was amazed I could make that many of the same item. After discovering Etsy (during the wedding planning) and with encouragement from family and friends I opened my eshop. Right now it’s more of a hobby thing that’s a lot of fun, but I’m hoping to open my own brick and mortar handmade boutique in a few years. Fingers crossed!

Kelly: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started creating your intricate clay pieces?

Kim: I am married, for almost 23 years, and I have three fabulous daughters. I have lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, my whole life until just 4 months ago. We moved to New Mexico. Small city, big change!

I have always done some type of artwork. I started out drawing, painting and doing odd art jobs here and there. Painting scenery, murals, faux finishing in homes etc…. I discovered polymer clay about eight years ago just after I had my third child, and started goofing around with it. I thought it was pretty neat, and I loved the versatility of polymer clay. It comes in artist paint colors so it was a good match with my painting background. I especially liked that it took very little overhead and space, so I could work at home and be with my kids.

Kelly: How would you describe your design style? Why you are drawn to it?

Kim: I don’t know if I really have a design style; I never thought about it that way. I do know that I get bored easily, so I try one thing until I get bored and then onto the next. I learned techniques from reading and experimenting. You learn a lot from just doing. Some things work and some things don’t, and sometimes I am pleasantly surprised. I do have a gigantic box of “scrap” clay.

Kelly: What are your favorite things about creating your pieces?

Kim: I love the possibilities with polymer clay. It is a very unique medium, and I am drawn to the bright colors. I am inspired by growing things and textures. A lot of my ideas are results of experiments gone wrong that turn into something completely usable. I am trying to come up with functional pieces. Things that can be used or that make someone happy. I have had the most fun creating fairy doors. Some of the sweet stories that people send me after they get one of my doors are just so heartwarming.

Kelly: What made you want to turn your art into a business?

Kim: I have always been fortunate to have my hobbies turn into business. I have painted, designed cd covers, taught dance, sold bead work, and now clay work. I think it is because I don’t know what else to do. I have always leaned toward anything that is art-related. My husband has been very supportive too. He always says,”you don’t know if you don’t try”. So I try and try and try. Sometimes it works!
I feel very lucky to be able to do what I love.

Wasn’t that a wonderful interview? I love her honesty; so refreshing. Aren’t her pieces beautiful? So very unique.
